about

Sonrise was written recently for my son Jonas and was untitled when the Parker Trio first played it at the Deer Head Inn just days before the session for this album began. I announced on the gig that the song had been written for my son with the intent of capturing the feeling of concern my wife and I have had for Jonas’s well-being during the pandemic of 2020-2021 (he was 11 when it began). On our break Jonas came over to me and said he might have a title: “Sonrise, with an O”. I was very moved that he had thought of such an apt title. Even through all my heightened worries, I always felt that Jonas was going to be OK., and I hope the open-ended 'conclusion' of this piece reflects the ultimate feeling of optimism I have for his future.
